Climate Project

Hello!

Here i am, would like to tell you about my Climate Project.

Before it, i want to tell you a bit about who I am and what I'm doing.

I'm a YAP (youth advisory panel) Plan Indonesia's member. Now I'm working with DRM (disaster risk management) Program in Plan Indonesia, I'm working on Environment, Disaster, & Climate issues.

On November 2015 - January 2016, I involve the Digital Mapping project by Unicef Indonesia and also the climate consultation project with Plan Indonesia, Unicef, and Green Voice Indonesia.

The goal of those projects is to make young people around Jakarta, Bandung, and 3 Areas in Timor Island understand about the climate & environment issues.

The Climate Consultation missions are: to build young people's capacity in order to be a climate agent in their environment and their community. To build an understanding between young people and local government, they have to work together to reduce risks of the disasters that caused by climate change.

After the Climate Consultation, the youth participants selected their friend to be a representative for the digital mapping training.
The Digital Mapping project missions are: the young people can be a youth reporter on environment issues. To make a connection between young people around the world who are paying attention to the environment issues.

I’m working with DRM (disaster Risk Management) Program in Plan Indonesia, it means I’m working on DRR (disaster risk reduction) and CCA (climate change adaptation) issues along with the climate change issue.

There are some organizations who involved the consultation project, there were Green Voice, YFCC (youth for climate change), UNICEF, and local environment organizations. Beside the organizations, around 200 students in 6 High schools and a couple of groups of young people who are involved in this project. The amount of the people who are involved in this consultation project is about 270 people from 6 Provinces in Indonesia.
25 Students from 6 high schools in Bandung involved the Digital Mapping training.

The Consultation project’s participants did the consultation with the youth facilitator (the YFCC members, YAP members and I) in each School and youth groups, and then, the participants selected their representative to attend the Bandung Conference (in Bandung) & National Conference in Jakarta. The Representatives from each group met in the conferences and build the connection between each.
The representatives had a discussion in the conference to build a group called “Climate Warriors”. They communicate by the Messenger group, talk about the climate change issue and discuss how to raise the society awareness about their environment.

In the consultation period, the youth facilitators (including me) built the participants’ awareness, we built their capacity to be more aware to their environment especially their habits that could ruin and harm for climate. We (The facilitators) also let the young people discussed about the climate effects and disasters (also the disaster risks) which affected their communities. We helped them to find ways to solve it, by raising communities’ awareness and work together (we called it as ‘Kerjabakti’, is kind of an old tradition that led the people in community to work together by cleaning the environment, plant trees together, recycling the waste, etc).

So that after the consultation, we help the participants made a Pledge, the pledge was totally extraordinary. They promise to share their capacities to their friends by Social Media and also to their own community by approaching the community leader, they raised their voices to the community leader that they (young people) want to work together with adults to end the disaster risks that caused by climate change.
After the consultation, we trained the Digital Mapping to the youth representatives, so after the training session, they did the Digital Mapping training to their school mates.

A day before the National Conference, Climate Warriors and I have made a Youth Pledge declared about the young people could involve in every single way to stop climate change. The Pledge also declared about meaningful youth participation in each Government’s Program to tackle climate change. We read the Pledge in front of the conference’s attendees, so the attendees (including the Government’s representatives & NGO’s representatives) heard our Pledge.

The Natioal Conference, youth representatives sat together with the government's & Unicef's representative.

After the conference, we (the facilitators) broadcasted on Air in some Radio Channel in Jakarta and Bandung. We’ve been talking about climate situation in Jakarta and Bandung and raised the audience’s awareness about the importance of save the climate. There are a lot of people (audiences) who interested to join the Climate Warriors and interested to do our advices in order to save climate. They contacted us while we were broadcasted on Air, they called us by phone to ask questions and sent us a message to tell their interest.

The Climate Warriors and I also campaigning the stop climate change and stop doing the habits that could harm the environment by our social media, so that we can reached lot of young people’s awareness.

I learnt so much from these projects. I’ve got a powerful messages, it said “we don’t need the special age to change everything to be better. We just need some people who want a change, build a power and work for the change. The Earth is waiting for us to change our bad habits”.

My biggest challenge is when I build the communication between the adults (especially the government’s representative) and the young people. It was really hard to make the adults understand that the young people had a big power to change the climate change and work with them meaningfully as partner to solve the environment issues.

I hope that GVC members and YAP members would work together for the YAP-MYP (youth adult partnership – meaningful youth participation) issues, by promoting the YAP-MYP to other people, so they can fully understand its importance.
So I think when all the people fully understand about YAP-MYP, we can work for every issue with them together without any gap between youth and adults.
